UPDATE 2/9: The Lady Winds will take on the Olton Fillies on Monday at 6:00 p.m. at Lubbock’s Coronado High School gym.
RALLS – The Floydada Lady Winds stepped up their game defensively to win the District 4-2A Co-Championship on Tuesday night at Jackrabbit Gym with a 41-28 over Ralls. The Lady Winds (19-8) and Hale Center Lady Owls (19-11) share the district championship after finishing double-round robin play with identical 6-2 records.
With Hale Center’s 50-40 win over the Lockney Lady Horns Tuesday, the Lady Owls edge Floydada in head-to-head standings, meaning Floydada becomes the district’s number two seed in the playoffs.
“The Lady Winds played with a lot of heart and determination especially in the second half to get the win. There was a lot of pressure on the team after losing a disappointing game to Hale Center on Friday at home. At intermission I encouraged them to compete and finish it,” explained a relieved Floydada coach Adam Zepeda.
Floydada outscored Ralls in the first and third quarters of the game. Freshman Soriah Wickware was the game’s leading scorer with 13, senior Erin Trevino put in 9, while sophomore Sierra Snowden had 8-points and a game high 12-rebounds.
The Whirlwinds followed the girls contest with an exciting fourth quarter finish to defeat Ralls 71-68 in boys action.
The Lady Winds and their fans returned to Whirlwind Gym after 10:00pm to cut down the nets and receive their gold basketball trophy while the music of Queen (“We are the Champions”) was playing over the sound system.
Seniors Erin Trevino and Celese Wickware both told the Floyd County Record, “this is exciting to win the district championship especially after being picked to finish in last place in the pre-season. We just stuck with it and proved some people wrong.”
Floydada will now play the Olton Fillies in a Bi-District game probably on Monday night at a venue in Lubbock. The Lady Winds lost to the Mustangs by four points back in November. Floydada is the No. 2 seed out of 4-2A, and Olton (12-17) is the No. 3 seed from 3-2A.
This is the first time the Lady Winds have won district in girls basketball since 2002, when they were also co-champions.
The game will be carried live on 106.1 FLiP FM and streamed here at FloydCountyRecord.com
