Whirlwinds obtain 20th win against Owls

FLOYDADA – The Floydada Whirlwinds (20-4, 3-3) jumped up to the number two position in the 4-2A basketball standings with a 77-63 win over the Hale Center Owls at Whirlwind Gym on Friday. The New Deal Lions clinched the district championship and number one playoff seed by defeating the Lockney Longhorns 65-34 at Longhorn Gym. There are still two more games remaining in the regular season of the boys double round robin schedule.

Floydada came out with a strong first half to a take a 42-31 lead to intermission. The Whirlwinds then were able to fight off the Owls in the final two quarters by a 35-32 margin.

Hale Center 6’4” freshman Trey Coleman had a big game of performing a game high double-double with 32-points and 20-rebounds in a losing effort.

Floydada counter-punched by committee with four players scoring in the double figures led by Abran Castillo’s 18, Aiden Trevino with 16, Jayson Cooper put in 12 and Braun Hobbs added 10.
