FLOYDADA — First Baptist Church of Floydada is collecting plastic lids and bottle caps that will be made into a bench for A.B. Duncan Elementary.
Ludustia Prisk, who is organizing the project for the church, says that they need to collect 250 pounds of caps and lids to complete it. Once the group has all the lids they need — Prisk says that they have already collected around 200 pounds — they will sort out the unacceptable ones and then drive to Indiana with their haul to exchange the plastic for a 100 percent recycled bench that will be given to the school.
Prisk says that the company they’re working with on the project, Green Tree Plastics, collects only caps and lids for the program because many recycling firms do not accept them.
Community members are encouraged to contribute their caps and lids to the project. Items must be clean and dry, and acceptable items include the following:
- Medicine bottle caps (with paper and cardboard removed)
- Hair spray, paint and deodorant caps
- Milk jug caps
- Flip-top caps
- Detergent caps (with gasket and label removed)
- Toothpaste and ointment tube caps
- Drink bottle caps
- Cottage cheese, sour cream and Cool Whip container lids
- Peanut butter and mayonnaise container lids
- Butter and frosting container lids
- Any other lids under eight inches wide with recycling numbers 2, 4 or 5
Bottles, containers and metal items are not accepted. A comprehensive list of acceptable donations is available at this link.
