HALE CENTER — The Floydada Lady Winds (15-7, 2-1) had won their last four outings by close margins with an average of three points a game, but in the fourth quarter on Tuesday, the Hale Center Lady Owls (15-10, 2-1) took control outscoring the Lady Winds 14-2 down the stretch for a 51-39 win at Owls Gym.
The Hale Center win moved the Lady Owls into a second-place tie with Floydada in the 4-2A girls race with identical 2-1 records. New Deal leaped to a half-game lead in the race when the Lady Lions improved to 3-1 in the district with a 47-36 victory over the Lockney Lady Horns at New Deal.
Floydada and Lockney were all knotted up at halftime 20-20 and remained tied 37-37 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Owls capitalized on the Lady Winds point guard Zay Santos getting into foul trouble and got on a run at the right time to end the game.
Hale Center had three players score in double-figures, led by Mirayah Espinosa’s 17. Chloe Baca had 13, and MaKayla Espinosa contributed 10. The Lady Winds were led by Soriah Wickware’s 11 and Erin Trevino with 8.
