FLOYDADA — Texas State Representative Dustin Burrows was in Floyd County on Tuesday, ahead of his district’s encompassing of Floyd County for the 2023 Texas Legislature. Burrows, from Lubbock, was elected to his seat in 2014 and chairs the powerful House Calendars committee, setting much of the agenda during the legislative session.

During redistricting proceedings that took place in the most recent state legislature special session Burrows’ District 83 took over Floyd County from current District 68 representative David Spiller of Jacksboro, whose district stretches to just north of the Dallas/Fort Worth region. Burrows’ new district would go from Floyd County to the Colorado City area, then over to Brownfield.

Burrows’ meeting Tuesday at the Floyd County Courthouse was attended by county and city officials as well as superintendents from Floydada and Lockney. During his 45-minute speech Burrows talked about his accomplishments in the most recent legislative session, known officiailly as the 87th Legislature, handing out a packet that applauded the conservative path he and others charted in the 2021 session on public safety, protection of the unborn and voting rights.

When Burrows opened the floor for questions, the gathered crowd asked him about border protection, something Burrows was glad to say was moving in the right direction in spite of the federal government. Burrows also spoke on the overall power situation in Texas, and said that even though Floyd County is a shining example of how wind power is an economic driver for the community, Texas is in danger of overreliance on renewable energy (to the tune of more than 30 percent) as the population of the state as a whole increases.

Burrows said he looked forward to working with Judge Marty Lucke and county officials as District 83 moves into Floyd County, and promised to keep an open line of communication throughout the election cycle and moving forward toward the 88th Legislature.
