Texas Cotton Crop 75 Percent Larger Than 2020

LUBBOCK, TX – USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released their November Crop Production Report on Tuesday, with an upland cotton production forecast of 17.9 million bales nationally, up 27 percent from last year.

In addition, NASS is forecasting corn production of 15.1 billion bushels, up 7 percent from 2020. The sorghum crop production is up 26 percent from last year at 471 million bushels. The U.S. peanut production is forecast at 6.24 billion pounds, up 1 percent from a year ago. Soybean production is forecast at 4.42 billion bushels, 5 percent above last year’s estimate.

For Texas, the upland cotton production is forecast at 8.1 million bales, 77 percent higher than in 2020. Yield averaged 741 pounds per acre, compared with 686 pounds last year. Acreage harvested, at 5.25 million acres, is up 64 percent from last year.

Texas corn production is forecast at 238 million bushels, up 3 percent from the previous year. Statewide yields averaged 140 bushels per acre, 12.0 bushels higher than 2020. However, acres harvested for grain, at 1.7 million, is down 6 percent from last year.

Texas sorghum production is forecast at 123 million bushels, up 30 percent from last year. Yield averaged 67 bushels per acre, up 4 bushels from the previous year. Acres harvested, at 1.83 million acres, is 22 percent higher than 2020.

Texas soybean production is forecast at 3.4 million bushels, down 9 percent from last year. Yield is expected to average 34 bushels per acre, unchanged from 2020. Harvested acreage, at 100 thousand acres, is 9 percent lower than last year.

Texas peanut production is 12 percent higher than last year, at 543 million pounds. Yield is forecast at 3,500 pounds per acre, up 650 pounds from 2020. However, harvested acres are down 9 percent from last year to 155 thousand acres.
